Abdication
On 28 January, shortly before her 75th birthday, Princess Beatrix announced her intention to abdicate on 30 April 2013.
New generation
Princess Beatrix expressed her belief that it was time for the responsibility for the Netherlands to pass to a new generation. The Princess said she felt fortified by the knowledge that making way for her successor did not mean stepping down from public life, and that she hoped still to have many opportunities to meet members of the public. She ended by expressing her gratitude for the trust placed in her throughout the many rewarding years of her monarchy.
