The King has a chamberlain in each Dutch province. Chamberlains provide support and advice in the preparation and organisation of royal visits to their region.

Chamberlains are involved in big events and receptions, like King’s Day, Prinsjesdag (the State Opening of Parliament), New Year receptions, state visits and working visits to their region. They accompany newly appointed ambassadors when they present their credentials to the King at Noordeinde Palace. They also represent the King at milestone wedding anniversaries, funerals of prominent individuals and other events in their region.

Chamberlains have extensive knowledge about their region and possess an extensive network. Just like the role of lady-in-waiting and Mistress of the Robes, that of chamberlain is an honorary one, that is to say unsalaried.
