King to attend Benelux 60th anniversary celebrations

On the afternoon of Tuesday 5 June 2018 His Majesty the King will attend the celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the Benelux. His Majesty King Philippe of the Belgians and His Royal Highness Henri, Grand Duke of Luxembourg, will also be in attendance.

Before the official programme commences, the three heads of state will meet with the prime ministers and foreign ministers of the Benelux countries during a luncheon at the Royal Palace in Brussels. In the morning, the prime ministers will attend meetings as part of the Benelux Summit.

In 1958 Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg signed the treaty establishing the Benelux Economic Union, which laid the foundations for broader and deeper economic cooperation between the three countries. In 2008 these links were confirmed once again, under a new name – the Benelux Union – and a focus on three themes: the internal market and economic union; sustainability; and justice and home affairs.
