King to attend 30th anniversary event of the European Medicines Agency

On the morning of Wednesday 25 June, His Majesty King Willem-Alexander will attend the scientific conference ‘Medicines, regulation and the future’ being held in Amsterdam by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to mark its 30th anniversary.

EMA is a decentralised agency of the European Union. It was established in 1995 and has had its headquarters in Amsterdam since 2019. EMA is responsible for the scientific evaluation, supervision and safety monitoring of medicines for human and veterinary use in the EU. The organisation works closely with national medicines authorities, such as the Medicines Evaluation Board (CBG) in the Netherlands.

After a word of welcome by the executive director, the King will officially open the conference. There will be presentations about EMA’s history and how its role has evolved in terms of medicines regulation and scientific research. There will also be a presentation about the discovery and application of GLP-1 agonists, a type of peptide hormone that plays a major role in regulating blood sugar levels. Afterwards the King will speak with representatives of EMA and patient organisations, and with healthcare professionals.
