His Majesty the King will attend the commemoration of 250 years of the First Salute on St. Eustatius on the morning of Monday November 16. Prime Minister Rob Jetten and State Secretary Eric van der Burg of Kingdom Relations and Effective Government are also present. Prior to the commemoration, there’s a celebration on Sunday, the 15th of November, in the evening at Fort Oranje.
This year, the United States reflect on 250 years of independence. On the 16th of November 1776, a canon salute was given from Fort Oranje in response to the salute of the American ship Andrew Doria. A couple of months after the American Independence War, this meant the first recognition of a foreign power for the United States. This is being commemorated on Statia Day, the island’s annual holiday.
