Queen Máxima talks about inclusive finance with Mexican leaders

On the afternoon of 17 December 2020 Her Majesty Queen Máxima, in her capacity as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development (UNSGSA), will have an online meeting with Mexico’s finance minister Arturo Herrera Gutiérrez and Juan Pablo Graf Noriega, President of the Comisión Nacional Bancaria y de Valores (CNBV), to discuss Mexico’s progress in the area of inclusive finance.

The Mexican government presented its National Policy for Financial Inclusion in March 2020, setting out the steps the government is taking to improve people’s access to financial services. In the virtual meeting, Queen Máxima will talk with Mr Herrera and Mr Graf about improving access to and use of digital financial services, financial health, and tailoring financial services to the needs of disadvantaged groups such as low-income groups, women, small businesses and farms.

The Queen visited Mexico in the context of her work on inclusive finance in 2011, 2016 and 2017 (RVD press release nos. 140, 156 and 197). In 2018 Mexico introduced a new fintech law to promote safe and sustainable innovation in digital financial services – an initiative supported by the Queen in her role as UNSGSA and by the members of her Reference Group.

Queen Máxima has been the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development since 2009. In that role, besides advising the Secretary-General, she works worldwide to promote safe and affordable access to financial services for all, including low-income groups, women and SMEs in agriculture and other sectors.
