Each member of the Royal House has their own flag, known as a personal standard. The King’s flag is known as the royal standard. The flags of the members of the Royal House, like their coats of arms, are established by Royal Decree.
Personal standards are flown on cars and sometimes aircraft in which members of the Royal House are travelling during official trips. If the member of the Royal House is in the Netherlands, the flag can also be raised at their place of residence.
The royal standard and the various personal standards are never flown at half-mast. As a display of mourning, a black pennon can be attached to the flag.
The personal flags of members of the Royal House are divided into four quarters by a four-armed cross, with the coat of arms of the Kingdom in the centre. On the royal standard the coat of arms is surrounded by the ribbon and cross of the Military Order of William. For female members of the Royal House the flag is swallowtailed. Those born into the Royal House have an orange flag with a blue cross, while those who have married into it have a blue flag with an orange cross.
The Princess of Orange and her sisters
The Princess of Orange and her sisters (once they reach the age of 18) use an orange swallowtail flag divided into four quarters by a cross of Nassau blue. In the centre is the coat of arms of the Kingdom surmounted by a crown. The bugle horn from the arms of the House of Orange is in the upper left quarter, and the tower from the Zorreguieta arms in the lower left quarter.
Queen Máxima
Queen Máxima uses a swallowtail flag of Nassau blue divided into four quarters by an orange cross. In the centre is the coat of arms of the Kingdom surmounted by a crown. The bugle horn from the arms of the House of Orange is in the upper left quarter, and the tower from the Zorreguieta arms in the lower left quarter.
Princess Beatrix and her sisters
Princess Beatrix and her sisters use an orange swallowtail flag divided into four quarters by a cross of Nassau blue. In the centre is the coat of arms of the Kingdom surmounted by a crown. The bugle horn from the arms of the House of Orange is in the upper left quarter, and the rose from the arms of the House of Lippe in the lower left quarter. When she was queen, Princess Beatrix used the royal standard. Since her abdication in 2013 she has reverted to using the same flag as her sisters.
Prince Constantijn
Prince Constantijn uses an orange flag divided into four quarters by a cross of Nassau blue. In the centre is the coat of arms of the Kingdom surmounted by a crown. The upper left and lower right quarters carry the bugle horn from the arms of the House of Orange and the upper right and lower left quarters carry the white castle from the Van Amsberg arms. King Willem-Alexander also used this flag until his investiture in 2013. Since that time he has used the royal standard.
Princess Laurentien
Princess Laurentien uses a swallowtail flag of Nassau blue divided into four quarters by an orange cross. In the centre is the coat of arms of the Kingdom surmounted by a crown. The bugle horn from the arms of the House of Orange is in the upper left quarter, and the yellow lozenge from the Brinkhorst arms in the lower left quarter.
