On Tuesday 7 April, Her Majesty Queen Máxima will be discussing financial health with Maria Luís Albuquerque, the European Commissioner for Financial Services and the Savings and Investments Union. The meeting is a follow-up to an online discussion on 24 February. The European Commission has developed a financial literacy strategy in order to enhance the financial health of EU citizens.
The aim of the meeting on 7 April is to explore how the EU and Queen Máxima as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health and honorary chair of the Money Wise Platform and the Netherlands Financial Health Foundation (SFGN) can work together to amplify their efforts.
Last year the European Commission launched its Financial Literacy Strategy, aimed at increasing EU citizens’ financial resilience and improving their knowledge of money matters. The Commission also recently launched a new network of national ambassadors to strengthen financial literacy in EU member states. In her capacity as honorary chair of the Money Wise Platform, Queen Máxima is one of those ambassadors.
For more than 15 years, Queen Máxima has been promoting financial health and financial education in the Netherlands and around the world by drawing attention to issues like the importance of saving to create a financial buffer, budgeting, borrowing responsibly and building up a pension. Financial education can help households achieve financial health. In addition, Queen Máxima advocates for innovative financial products, services and policies that help people manage their day-to-day finances, protect themselves against risks, invest responsibly and feel confident about their financial future.
